What changed in Budget 2024 for capital gains?

LTCG on listed equity/equity MFs was raised from 10% to 12.5% (exemption increased from ₹1L to ₹1.25L). STCG on equity went from 15% to 20%. Indexation was removed on LTCG for property and other assets, with LTCG at 12.5% without indexation.

What is the holding period for LTCG?

Listed equity/equity MFs: 12 months. Property, unlisted shares, gold and other assets: 24 months. Debt MFs purchased after 1 April 2023 have no LTCG benefit — always slab.

Does ₹1.25L exemption apply every year?

Yes. Each financial year, the first ₹1.25 lakh of equity LTCG is exempt. Beyond that, 12.5% applies.

Are debt mutual funds taxed differently?

Yes. Debt MFs bought on or after 1 April 2023 are taxed at your slab rate with no LTCG benefit. Older debt MF units still enjoy LTCG at 12.5% without indexation (Budget 2024).
